After the Blyde River Canyon we stayed at the Pezulu Treehouse Game Lodge. This is a private animal
preserve, not connected to Kruger NP. While at Pezulu we all took the time to try a micro-light safari.

Our first night at Pezulu involved a jeep breakdown, at night, and while in an area with lions and leopards.
We had to walk about 1.3kms back to the gate. We were all a bit jumpy.

Near Pezulu is the White Lion Breeding Project. White haired lions are not albinos - it is
simply a recessive genetic trait, sort of like blond hair in humans. These lions cannot live
in the wild as they cannot effectively hunt. This facility breeds them to keep the gene alive
and mixes in wild lion genes where possible to avoid in-breeding. These are beautiful
animals.

Unfortunately, this was also the first (and only) place we ran into some of "old" South
Africa. The owner of the project reportedly does not allow black guides on his property
and is very reluctant to allow black tourists on either. There is even a recent (Feb 2004
report of an alleged murder involving the property.

The Moholoholo Animal Rehabilitation Center houses animals hurt by the hand of man.
They are particularly concerned with vultures and other birds of prey impacted by the
practice of using poisoned carcasses to kill hyenas and other predators.
